MANILA – Nagpulong nitong Biyernes ng gabi ang mga miyembro ng Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Board para talakayin ang ipinalabas na resolusyon tungkol sa deployment ban ng mga overseas Filipino worker sa 41 bansa.

Ayon kay presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda, ang pulong ay ginawa batay na rin sa kahilingan ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) na ipagpaliban ang pagpapatupad ng resolusyon habang kinakausap nila ang mga apektadong bansa.

“Last night I think the POEA Board met to discuss the request of the DFA to defer the ban (but) I’m not clear ano naging decision ng POEA," paliwanag ni Lacierda nang makapanayam sa dzRB radio nitong Sabado.

Si Department of Labor and Employment secretary Rosalinda Baldoz ang umuupong chairperson ng POEA governing board. Samantala, nagsisilbi namang vice chairman ng board si POEA administrator Carlos Cao Jr.

Sinabi ni Lacierda na “understandable" na kapwa nagpapahalaga ang DFA at DOLE sa kapakanan ng mga OFW sa bansa na kanilang pupuntahan.

*Three (3) pieces of recent passport-size colored pictures in plain white background with complete name tag

*2011 Community Tax Certificate;

*One (1) piece of window envelope with postage stamp worth P9.

*Examination fee is P900.

Note: A copy of birth or marriage certificate from the local civil registrar must be submitted if the NSO copy is not legible.

MONTREAL — Canadian officials on Friday announced a new two-year, multi-entry "super visa" for parents and grandparents of immigrants settled in Canada.

The move came after wait times for sponsorship of "family class" applications had grown to an unwieldy seven years or longer.

"Without taking action, those times will continue to grow, and that is unacceptable," said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney in announcing the move.

"Action must be taken to cut the backlog, reduce the wait times, and ensure that the parents and grandparents program is sustainable over the long run," Kenney said.

Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay said the new guidelines on "offloading" or barring passengers from flying to certain countries, including the United Arab Emirates, may come out by November.

According to a report of Gulf News, Binay disclosed this information over the weekend during a visit to Abu Dhabi.

“We have agreed to come up with a set of clear-cut guidelines, a checklist of the questions that will be asked and documents to be presented. Other IACAT (Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking) member agencies will accompany BI officials in interviewing (travelers)," Binay was quoted as saying.

The Philippine Consulate in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is closed on November 1 and five other days this month.

In an announcement on its website, the Consulate said the closures are in observance of national holidays of the Philippines and the UAE.

Among the dates the Consulate will be closed are:


•November 1: All Saints Day (Philippines)

•Nov. 6 to 8: Eid'l Adha (Philippines/UAE)

•November 27: Al-Hijra (UAE)

•November 30: Bonifacio Day (Philippines)

Instead of waiting at long lines, Filipinos applying for electronic passports in the United Arab Emirates can now track the progress of their applications online.

The initiative of the Consulate General is expected to benefit some 400,000 Filipinos based in Dubai and the northern emirates, the news site Gulf News reported.

Consul General Benito Valeriano urged Filipinos to monitor their passport applications online at http://passport.pcgdubai.net/ instead of calling the embassy about it.

Passport applicants will be asked to enter their first and late names, and the date of application.

However, the consulate clarified that "only passports applied on and after 01 February 2011 are available for tracking."

Some 600 jobs from 25 firms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be up for grabs on November 11 at a job fair organized by Filipinos there, a Gulf News report said.

The Filipino Human Resources Practitioners Association-UAE (Fil-HR), a group of more than 100 hiring professionals, will hold the fair at the Al Safa Sports Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Its third job fair is part of its ongoing effort to connect jobseekers to employers, news site Gulf News reported on Saturday ().

According to the Gulf News report, job applicants must prepare at least three curriculum vitaes on that day.

They will also be asked to register their personal information.

First, the good news: You probably won’t get cancer.


That is, if you have a healthy lifestyle. “As many as 70% of known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to lifestyle,” says Thomas A. Sellers, PhD, associate director for cancer prevention and control at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Still, since cancer is one of the top five lady killers, taking steps to eat a healthy diet, increase exercise, and avoid tobacco products is key; however, recent research has uncovered many small, surprising ways you can weave even more disease prevention into your everyday life. Try these novel strategies and your risk of cancer could dwindle even more.

Healthy Cancer Prevention Recipes

1. Filter your tap water

You’ll reduce your exposure to known or suspected carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. A new report from the President’s Cancer Panel on how to reduce exposure to carcinogens suggests that home-filtered tap water is a safer bet than bottled water, whose quality often is not higher—and in some cases is worse—than that of municipal sources, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group. (Consumer Reports’ top picks for faucet-mounted filters: Culligan, Pur Vertical, and the Brita OPFF-100.) Store water in stainless steel or glass to avoid chemical contaminants such as BPA that can leach from plastic bottles.

2. Stop topping your gas tank

So say the EPA and the President’s Cancer Panel: Pumping one last squirt of gas into your car after the nozzle clicks off can spill fuel and foil the pump’s vapor recovery system, designed to keep toxic chemicals such as cancer-causing benzene out of the air, where they can come in contact with your skin or get into your lungs.

3. Marinate meat before grilling

Processed, charred, and well-done meats can contain cancer-causing heterocyclic amines, which form when meat is seared at high temperatures, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which get into food when it’s charcoal broiled. “The recommendation to cut down on grilled meat has really solid scientific evidence behind it,” says Cheryl Lyn Walker, PhD, a professor of carcinogenesis at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. If you do grill, add rosemary and thyme to your favorite marinade and soak meat for at least an hour before cooking. The antioxidant-rich spices can cut HCAs by as much as 87%, according to research at Kansas State University.

4. Caffeinate every day

Java lovers who drank 5 or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a 40% decreased risk of brain cancer, compared with people who drank the least, in a 2010 British study. A 5-cup-a-day coffee habit reduces risks of oral and throat cancer almost as much. Researchers credit the caffeine: Decaf had no comparable effect. But coffee was a more potent protector against these cancers than tea, which the British researchers said also offered protection against brain cancer.

5. Water down your cancer risk

Drinking plenty of water and other liquids may reduce the risk of bladder cancer by diluting the concentration of cancer-causing agents in urine and helping to flush them through the bladder faster. Drink at least 8 cups of liquid a day, suggests the American Cancer Society.
