SAN FRANCISCO – Filipino nurses joined a protest in front of the headquarters of one of the biggest health insurance providers in the country.
Their message: stop raising rates, especially when people can barely afford health care.
Members of the California Nurses Association held a picket in front of Blue Shield’s San Francisco office, protesting the company’s plan to spike health care coverage rates up to 59% for individuals.
They said out of all the major insurers, Blue Shield is the only one that refuses to delay premium increases.

MAASIN CITY, Feb 10(PIA) - It's still almost a year ahead but preparations for the surgical, medical and dental missions in Southern Leyte is underway.
About 60 medical volunteers based in Washington D.C., USA have signified to actively participate in the forthcoming missions on January 2012 this early, Mrs. Luz V. Mercado, the better half of Congressman Roger G. Mercado disclosed in an interview with PIA Wednesday.
Mercado reported that Ms. Alice Andam, president of the Philippine Nurses Association Metropolitan Washington D.C., Inc personally came to the province and laid the groundworks such as the hotel accommodations, hospital facilities that they will need during the week- long missions.
She further said that the group targeted to reach out to some 4,000 patients during the missions and provide free medicines, space at the hospital, as well. Where Ms. Andam had already conferred with the provincial medical officer, Dr. Joselito Trumata of the Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) and division heads.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 13, 2011) – Good news for Filipino nurses – a company in the oil-rich state of Dubai is now hiring at least 200 nurses to work in the United Arab Emirates.
Atallah Habib, of the Al Hilal Private Nursing and Medical Services based in Dubai, said they will still need hundreds of nurses and medical support staff this year because of the huge demand for Filipino nurses.
He said Filipino nurses are known for their skills and honesty and the most hardworking in Dubai. “Filipino nurses are really good because they are hardworking and honest and really good in the job and that’s why we are getting more and more Filipino nurses,” Habib, who recently visited Zamboanga City, told the Mindanao Examiner.
His company employs many Filipino nurses and supplies various hospital and private homes in the UAE. He said medical institutions in the Middle East are also sourcing its nursing staff from his company.
The company’s assistant manager Nemia Macabugao, also a Filipino nurse, said they are also hiring Muslim nurses from Mindanao. “There is a lot of opportunity for Filipino nurses because the demand for Filipino nurses is huge. We are known to be hardworking and honest and that’s what makes Filipino nurses the best for the job,” she said.

The recruitment of 500-nurses will be carried out by the Department of Labor and Employment of the Philippines in Region 9 very soon. The hiring process is being exercised as part of an initiative known as the Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service project.
It needs to be pointed out that the project is a measure that has been taken out by the country to meet its targets regarding the mandate for providing health care and social services to the citizens of Philippines. People belonging to poorer communities will be the ones, who will benefit the most out of the initiative.
If look at as a bigger picture, the RN-Heals project will help in achieving he objectives of the Millennium Development Goals set out by the UN. Various government departments like the Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Labor and Employment , the Philippines Nurses Association are working together to achieve the stipulated goals.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 29,711 out of 84,287 passed the Nurse Licensure Examination given by the Board of Nursing in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Dagupan, Davao, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena, Nueva Ecija, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga last December 2010.
Topping the list of nursing board exam passers is Weanne Myrrh Razon Estrada of the Adventist University of the Philippines with a grade of 88.4 percent.
The members of the Board of Nursing are Carmencita M. Abaquin, Chairman; Leonila A. Faire, Betty F. Merritt, Perla G. Po, Marco Antonio C. Sto.Tomas, Yolanda C. Arugay and Amelia B. Rosales , Members.

I know there's alot of speculations as to when the Dec 2010 NLE will be release, my advice is to just relax. Some are asking me if its true that it will be release this Feb. 20, 2011. I dont really know but lets just wait and see.

Master's degree programs in nursing in the US are mostly about specialization. Majority of MSN's in US universities are actually training programs for two different groups of specialization: advanced practice nursing, and non-advanced practice nursing. Advanced practice nursing is an umbrella term used by Boards of Nursing in the US for Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Specific MSN programs are aimed at training nurses for these roles.
On the other hand, there are also MSN programs that train nurses in non-advanced practice nursing fields such as nursing education, administration, informatics, and newer Clinical Nurse Leader role.
That being said, I doubt if a fresh hire from the Philippines, even with an MSN degree, will have enough credibility and background experience to function in the roles I have described above in the US health care setting. I just don't see a US employer giving credit to a Filipino nurse with an MSN degree especially when US health care facilities are hiring foreign nurses in entry-level RN positions only.
i think MAN is more applicable for those who want to be clinical instructors or professors... MSN i think is more useful in a hospital setting... there are so many schools now that offer MAN.. UERM in sta mesa offers MSN and you can choose if you want the thesis or non thesis tract...
