MANILA, Philippines -- The third batch of Filipinos applying as nurses are scheduled to leave for Japan on Sunday for an additional six months of Japanese language training there starting on May 30, the Japanese embassy in Manila has reported.

According to the embassy, the preparatory Japanese language training is made possible through the combined efforts of the governments of Japan and the Philippines.

Japan provided the language instructors and the Philippines arranged for the training venues.

"This endeavor, which is the first of its kind, goes beyond their standing commitments in the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) and aims to further assist Filipino candidate nurses in passing the Japanese Nursing Licensure Examination after they enter and study in Japan," the embassy said in a statement.

The third batch, which is made up 71 candidate nurses, had already gone through preparatory training from March 28 to May 20 in the Philippines.

At a send-off ceremony at the TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) head office in Taguig City, the embassy’s Minister for Economic Affairs of the Akio Isomata stressed that “being fully equipped with the Japanese language is of paramount importance for successful implementation of the Movement of Natural Persons (MNP) scheme under JPEPA.”

"It is essential not only for pursuing a successful career as qualified nurses in Japan but also for leading a well-integrated life in the Japanese society,” Isomata said in his speech
