The Japanese health ministry has rejected a plan to make it easier for Indonesian and Filipino nurses to qualify for work in Japan.
A 2008 Economic Partnership Agreement allows a number of Indonesian and Filipino nurses and caregivers to train and work in Japan. But the compulsory national exam and the level of language the overseas workers must pass is for most too difficult - no Indonesian nurses passed last year's exam.

Portia Fiesta is a Filipina nurse at the St. Rose San Martin Hospital. Fiesta is just one of the few nurses calling fellow RN's to volunteer for Haiti relief and ask for donations.

Ten Filipino nurses cleared last year of misdemeanor charges for quitting their jobs at a Long Island nursing home have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
The nurses were recruited from the Philippines to help ease a staffing shortage in the U.S., but resigned en masse in 2006 in a dispute over working conditions.

CEBU CITY – An official from the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) stated that retrogression continues to be the reason why no visas for competent nurses applying for work in the US are available, thus resulting to delay in their employment overseas.
However, PNAA President Leo Felix Jurado, during the 7th PNAA International Conference in this city which culminated Saturday gave assurances that the organization is attempting interventions to aid Filipino nurses applying for US visas.
Under said visa retrogression, as of December, 2009 visa applications from the Philippines shall be processed only through to August, 2005.
Jurado said Filipino nurses seeking employment in the US can be assured that talks are going on between nurse communities and US senators to include the end of visa retrogression in their health care reform measures.
