At least 117 Filipinos based in Hong Kong benefited from the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)’s first licensure examinations for nurses and midwives there.
The PRC held the examination at the Bayanihan Center in Kennedytown in Hong Kong from December 12 to 13, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

CEBU, Philippines - The future of medical tourism in the Philippines will not solely depend on the volume of foreign clients coming to the country to seek medical help, but its growth is largely reliant on the Filipinos working abroad.
“Unlike other countries, the Philippines has its natural market. It is not relying on foreign patients, because the source of constant and sustainable growth for the industry is the OFWs, or the Filipinos residing and working abroad,” said Department of Health head for special concerns Anthony Calibo.
According to Calibo regardless if foreigners come in the Philippines or not to seek medical help, the medical tourism industry here will still grow “because we have growing OFWs, who prefer to get medical attention in their home land.”

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Wednesday announced the start of the recruitment of the second batch of caregivers and nurses under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) on the Movement of Natural Persons.
POEA and the Japan International Corporation of Welfare Services (JICWELS) said applicants for nurses must be BSN graduates with board license at least three years experience.
Applicants for caregivers must be graduates from any four year course and certified as caregiver by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA); or a graduate from nursing school with no board license.

Remittances from the millions of Filipinos working abroad rose strongly in September from August, data from the country’s central bank showed, contributing to upbeat forecasts for the economy.
But with the Gulf accounting for more than half the number of Filipino workers hired abroad last year, they are unlikely to escape the slowdown unscathed. At the same time, buoyancy in other markets is expected to boost remittances growth and keep the overall economy on track for expansion this year.

The Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) has placed a job order for 300 Filipino male medical workers with the Philippine Overseas Employment Authority (POEA), the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) disclosed Wednesday.
The DoLE said that the health professionals will be working for a state-owned medical institution that pioneers in emergency response and first aid support in Saudi Arabia. “The SRCA needs 200 nurses and paramedics and 100 physicians,’’ said Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito Roque.
“This is a government to government arrangement. Application and inquiries should only be made through the POEA,’’ he added.

MANILA, Philippines - The number of jobless Filipino nurses is likely to swell further with the expected slump in the hiring of medical workers in the United States and other countries to last for the next two years.
Dr. Fely Marilyn Lorenzo of the University of the Philippines Institute of Health Policy and Development Studies said government data indicated a falling trend in hiring of Filipino nurses for the past years.
“Data from the Commission on Filipino Overseas showed that the demand for Filipino nurses is slowing down in foreign countries, particularly in the country’s top markets,” Lorenzo said.

Joan Duhaylungsod has had to make a lot of adjustments since leaving the Philippines seven months ago for a nursing job in Pilot Mound.
She left family and friends and a tropical climate in a Third World country for a sparsely populated -- and much colder -- country halfway around the world.
While toiling in a long-term care facility in rural Manitoba, she's also had to spend months studying for an exam that would allow her to work as a registered nurse in the province -- a test she passed in October.
On Thursday, she and two dozen other Filipino nurses attended a ceremony at the Legislative Building marking the success of a government nursing recruitment program that has eased the staffing burden on rural health care facilities.

The Philippine government should ask Saudi Arabia to exempt Filipino nurses from the requirement to take the “prometric” exam to work in the country, the Migrante-Middle East said Friday, noting that the oil-rich country is the one that needs the services of Filipino nurses.
Migrante said the new qualifying exam required by the Saudi government is “an additional burden to Filipino nurses going to the Mideast.”
“The implementation of this new Saudi labor policy should not only be delayed, but should not be implemented at all by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA),” Migrante-ME regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona said in a statement.
POEA Administrator Jennifer Manalili had earlier asked Saudi Arabia to delay the implementation of the prometric exam, the equivalent to the licensure exam taken by nurses in the Philippines, to allow the government to prepare procedures for RP nurses planning to work in the Middle East countries to meet the new requirement

A recruitment expert on Sunday expressed concerned at the prospect of no work for some of the 95,000 nursing graduates who may pass the licensure examination currently being administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in selected public and private schools nationwide.
The second phase of the nursing board is set from Nov. 29 to Nov. 30 in 16 regions across the country. The first part was held last June.
“I pity the 95,000 nursing graduates who are poised to take the nursing licensure. Those who pass will join the more than 200,000 unemployed board passers whose experience are volunteer nursing or call center agents or crew in fastfood outlets,’’ said Lito Soriano, executive director of the Federated Association of Manpower Exporters and former president of the Philippine Association of Service Exporters Inc. (PASEI).
“Nurses deployed overseas is not more than 10,000 annually for the past five years. This is a massacre of loss opportunities. No one is waking up to reality,’’ he said in his text message to reporters.
Soriano lamented that the majority of board takers who are sons and daughters of toiling Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are “willing victims of unemployable college courses.’’
