Filipino nurses can now apply for work at the United Arab Emirates online, as a shortage of nurses there has prompted it to set up an online recruitment system for such caregivers.
A report on UAE-based Khaleej Times said the UAE Ministry of Health now allows applicants to register for entry exams online rather than in person.
“We launched the new registration system on the ministry website six months ago, and we have been getting hundreds of applications everyday," said Dr Fatima Al Rifaee, Director of the Federal Nursing Department in the ministry.

SALISBURY, England - The United Kingdom nursing work force is ageing and British nurses are leaving the country to work in the United States and in recent years, in Australia.
These are some of the contributing factors for the shortage of qualified nurses in the UK both in the National Health Service or NHS and the private sector.
The UK faces the so-called graying of the population of the nursing work force and the younger ones are not interested in the nursing profession because they have more options for jobs that offer better pay and working condition. Those who leave the county to work elsewhere are driven by better pay and living conditions.

The Philippine Embassy in Washington DC, USA has lauded a Filipina who was chosen as one of this year’s student scholars of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).
Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy Gaa cited Melanie Singh for being chosen as one of the 15 undergraduate scholars of the APNA-Janssen Student Scholarship Program and the only Filipina to receive the said scholarship this year.
In a letter to Singh, Gaa emphasized that the scholarship award “reflects highly of her academic performance and professional potential.”
“The scholarship award likewise underscores your exceptional ability to maintain your deep socio-civic and cultural involvement, particularly in promoting your Filipino heritage, at Catholic University of America and throughout the District 6 membership,” Ambassador Gaa stated in his letter to Singh.
Singh will be studying at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, a national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education institution founded by the US bishops. (Madel R. Sabater)

MANILA –Joblessness in the US could be a reason why the number of Filipino nurses taking the United States national licensure examinations decreased, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines said on Thursday.
"The confidence of foreign workers in America’s economic supremacy has clearly been shaken by the staggering job losses there," TUCP secretary general Ernesto Herrera said in a press statement.
